A Father's Diary
There are so many issues that I have been meaning to write on, but haven't got around to.

The gutkha ban. Somehow it just doesn't seem right. Yes, gutkha does cause oral cancer, but banning it just seems to be another piece of political opportunism. By the same token, cigarettes should be banned. This is an easy way out; instead of trying to control sales to minors and educating people about the ill-effects of gutkha, the politicians have decided to derive immediate, short-term mileage from a ban. And bans usually don't work.

Kahin na kahin koi hai. I saw one episode of the show yesterday and couldn't believe it. Yes, Madhuri looks radiant. But the sets are kitsch and awful. And to actually be up on TV and to talk about seeing guys for marriage? Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy? First of all, the concept of an arranged marriage is still a difficult one for me to digest (I know though they may work, etc.). On top of that to actually "interview" guys on television, in front of the whole world and to then decide among them? And the guys and parents actually agreed to come on TV? I guess this is what we are all becoming...publicity crazy, money hungry, voyeuristic....

Bend it like Beckam. I saw the film at the Imax Adlabs a couple of weeks ago. Sure the film is different and has a story. But eventually it is like any other Hindi film; the difference is in the treatment, the locales, the actors and the "small film" feel. Its terribly cliched; virtually every known cliché about an Indian family living in England has been thrown into the film. In the end, the only thing I missed was figuring out which one of the side-characters was Preeya Kalidas, the lead in "Bombay Dreams".

Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. I love this show. And virtually no one else I know, has even heard of it. But then I also like Xena, X-files, Star Trek and I can even stand watching The Black Scorpion. If any one of you actually watches Buffy, do get back to me. I probably need to seriously psychoanalyze myself.
